Mrsa In Schools

The MRSA staph infection is very hazardous and fatal among all other staph infections and is more prominent in populated areas like schools, hospitals and nursing homes. MRSA in schools is particularly troublesome problem because it plays with children. The best course of action is for parents and teachers to learn as much as they can about MRSA and how it can be prevented and treated. There is plenty of information available about MRSA and most schools have already released informational materials to parents regarding this potentially dangerous problem.

MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus. This is a form of staph which is resistant to traditional antibiotic therapy. This does not mean that it cannot be treated. The good news is that there are certain antibiotics like vancomycin which have shown favorable results. While there have been a few cases of vancomycin resistant MRSA, most cases do respond to this type of antibiotic. The problem is that there are many different strains of MRSA, some of which are more stubborn than others when it comes to medical treatment.

The best thing schools can do is work hard to prevent MRSA and recognize it in students before it reaches a dangerous level. Prevention includes frequent handwashing among students and staff, the use of hand sanitizers to kill germs, and the proper disinfection of school property. Students on sports teams and students who share locker rooms are especially sucseptible to staph infections. Students should wear waterproof slippers or flip flops when in the shower, and students should be advised not to share towels, razors, cosmetics or other personal items.

MRSA in schools is a scary prospect that has recently become a reality in some educational facilities. Although MRSA has been in existence for many years it has usually been confined to hospitals. Recognizing the symptoms of this infection can help parents, teachers and students obtain early detection and treatment. The symptoms include skin rash, pimples, boils and lesions that look like spider bites. Detecting MRSA can be done with a simple skin test that is quick and painless. If MRSA is diagnosed, an aggressive antibiotic such as the vancomycin mentioned above may be started.
