Mrsa Disease
The media coverage related to this issue has created the awareness among many. There have been occurrences of MRSA in schools, nursing homes and other facilities. MRSA has received much attention due to its availability in hospital settings. MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus which is a type of staph infection. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of this infection is very important because early detection and treatment is key in preventing life threatening complications.
The first symptoms of MRSA look harmless enough. You may notice red bumps on the skin that appear to be spider bites, boils or even pimples. The skin rash may become abscessed and grow larger. From here, the MRSA bacteria can travel into the bloodstream where it can effect many parts of the body including the bones and vital organs. The lethal cases of MRSA had progressed to this point and were too rampant to respond to even the most aggressive treatment. This is why it is so important to seek treatment immediately if you even suspect the slightest possibility of MRSA.
Your doctor can perform a skin culture to see if you are a MRSA carrier. This is recommended for healthcare workers who may be at a higher risk for developing this infection. If you show symptoms on the skin, skin cultures can also be used to test for the presence of an active MRSA infection. If MRSA is diagnosed, your doctor may do one of two things. He or she may drain the abscessed area and keep a close watch to see if the area heals without antibiotics. Or, he or she may go ahead and prescribe a strong antibiotic like vancomycin or doxycycline. For severe cases inpatient treatment and intravenous antibiotics may be required.
Stopping the spread of MRSA disease takes action on the part of healthcare workers, teachers, parents and even students. Washing hands frequently, using hand sanitizer, disinfecting rooms properly and not sharing personal items are all ways to prevent the spread of this dangerous bacteria. Athletes on sports teams and people who go to the gym should be vigilant about wearing foot protection in the shower. Taking a few simple precautions may prove helpful in preventing an outbreak of this potentially deadly type of staph infection.
