Handling Mrsa

MRSA is more prevalent under certain circumstances. Schools, hospitals and athletic facilities are breeding grounds for these bacteria. MRSA is fatal if treated improperly or untreated. The big problem with MRSA is that it starts off with mild symptoms that mimic other conditions. Recognizing and handling MRSA is something every healthcare worker, school administrator, team coach and parent should know how to do.

The early symptoms of MRSA may look just like a pimple, spider bite or boil. If left alone, these innocent looking bumps will get larger and develop deep abscesses through which the bacteria can travel to the bloodstream. If the bacteria is able to do this, the infection can spread to the bones, heart and lungs. As you can imagine, this can be deadly. There have been several deaths due to severe cases of MRSA recently. Because of this, no one should ever take chances with unexplained skin conditions that pop up. If you notice bumps on your skin, seek medical attention right away.

Your doctor can perform a skin culture to look for the presence of MRSA. If MRSA is detected, it may mean you are a MRSA carrier. MRSA carriers may not have symptoms of the disease. If symptoms are present and MRSA is diagnosed, antibiotic treatment with vancomycin or doxycycline may be started. If the infection is severe, this medicine may be administered via intravenous methods in the hospital. For less severe cases, the patient may be given antibiotics to take orally at home. In the least threatening of cases doctors may drain the abscesses without resorting to antibiotics.

The good news is that handling MRSA can be done in several ways as mentioned above. Not only that, but preventative measures can be taken to stop the spread of MRSA in the first place. Areas like nursing homes, hospitals, schools and locker rooms require frequent and effective disinfection to prevent MRSA. Individuals can cut their risk by not sharing towels, razors or other personal items. If you use a group shower such as at the gym, wear waterproof shoes to protect your feet. Frequent handwashing is another important step when it comes to preventing MRSA.
